Looking for a great Diaper Bag pattern

Looking for a great Diaper Bag pattern
    on: September 09, 2008, 01:23:18 PM
I currently have 2 store bought diaper bags that I HATE. I would love to make my own so that it will hold exactly what I need it to hold. Does anyone have any great pattern suggestions? I have never made anything as ambitious as a bag before but I am very good at learning as I go. Thanks for your help!

My next project is to try this diaper bag - one for me and one for a friend who is willing to purchase my handiwork!

        and the finished project is:

I'm really pleased with the final product. I missed a piece of lining from the inside of the back zippered pocket - but not noticable from the outside  Smiley

Would definately recommed - the instructions are clear and easy to follow.

here's the inside - got distracted with my mother on the phone!

It has two elasticated pockets on the inside, two flat pockets under the outside flap and one zippered pocket on the back and one on each side of the bag too - great for bottles etc....

This is only my third attempt at bag making, and also my first zip - I'm so pleased with me!  Grin

Since everyone carries different things in their diaper bag I would suggest that you make a bag organizer first.  http://www.marthastewart.com/good-things/removable-tote-organizer something like this (but with pockets to fit your items).  After that you can make a tote to size and add a change pad it needed.

I love the Amy Butler Nappy Bag http://www.sewmamasew.com/ccp0-prodshow/206.html.  I've used several diaper bags, but the Nappy Bag I made is the only one I use now.

I really love the Mail Sack from Pink Chalk Studio.  I use it as my diaper bag and it fits all sorts of good stuff in there.

I have made Butterick 4560 and while there are a lot of pieces and steps, it is a pretty straightforward messenger-style bag construction. Once I muddled through it the first time, my second attempt went much faster and I was able to make modifications to better fit my needs.

I am currently using a bag that I made using Amy Butler's Birdie Sling pattern. I like that as well, but think that it needs different pockets on the inside to keep things organized. I tend to lose things at the bottom of the bag since it is so deep. The Amy Butler Nappy Bag pattern also looks cute.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but I really like this tutorial for a diaper/messenger bag.

The one in http://www.amazon.com/Amy-Butlers-Little-Stitches-Butler/dp/0811861287/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229714835&sr=8-1 is really cute and looks useful too.  It's on my to-make list, if I have time.

I was going to suggest the Amy Butler Nappy Bag.  I love it and if I needed a diaper bag, I'd make it!  As it was, when I needed one, I just made a huge, rectangular shaped bag for myself.  It was 17 inches long, 15 inches high and about 4-6 inches deep.  BIG!  I made the pattern from newspaper and it was lined for strength.  I made that bag seven years ago and still use it (for other things now).  A couple things I wish I had done:  (1) reinforced the bottom and straps with interfacing, and possibly the sides (2) not put the bobbly puffball trim on the bottom, after seven years it is worse for wear.

Ditto on Amy Butler's Nappy Bag.  It's very stylish, has lots of room for baby stuff and does not hurt your shoulders when you're carrying it because the strap is so wide.  I'm fixing to make one for a friend next week!
