Try a few things and see what you like. I do NOT like the glue sprays at all. I like tacks if you can find good ones - the holes they make are no bigger than those caused by safety pins - because you don't need to remove them while you machine quilt. You just cut them off after you are done.  Unfortunately, most tack guns easily available are pretty junky.  I used to be able to buy one called Quiltak, from a company in Alaska, but I haven't seen it in a while.  Safety pins are easy and quick. I use #1 pins.  If you are hand quilting, hand basting works best because it doesn't get in the way of your hands or your hoop. But hand basting is a nuisance if you are machine quilting, because the foot catches on the basting threads.

So experiment and see what you like best.

You can use your new walking foot for very gentle curves, so don't think that you're limited to just straight lines and cross-hatches.  Just remember to go fairly slowly.  It's a walking foot, not a running foot!

That is too funny...and great info. Thanks!

I was going to suggest the walking foot too, seems like the other posters have more than covered that area of the answer.

As for finding a walking foot for your particular model, you could probably do a google search and see what results come up.  I bought a 1980-ish Singer at a thrift store for a whopping $15.  The thing runs like a champ and came with a case and everything for that price!  So I'm on the hunt for a walking foot for it now, and I've been having some good success at using Google and finding information that way.  I figure that even if I have to spend a bit for the foot it's worth it since the purchase price of the machine was so cheap, but I haven't bought one yet.

I use the same method of taping just the bottom layer if I'm using an adhesive spray.

But, if I've pinning the layers, then I make sure I tape down all the layers before I start pinning.  It just avoids movement and doesn't really take that much extra time (I usually get my husband to tape accross from me so it's taped evenly and quickly.

This dialogue has been so helpful, I am planning to try many methods until I am successful.  Thanks everyone for sharing your best practices.  I am on the lookout for basting spray!  --- Lisa

Don't wait for Xmas to get your walking foot!  They are generic and cheap...JoAnn is having a Columbus Day sale and had 50% and 40% off coupons in the paper.  You need to know what kind of shank your machine has. (That is where the presser foot attaches.)  It will be either short, long, or slant.  I had to buy a walking foot for a 1960's Necchi SuperNova when I first started sewing and it was very available.  However, do not buy one that has an all metal bar that rests on the needle screw part, get one that has plastic over it.  Not only is it loud, it  wore a groove where it layed.
