What do you do with your scraps?

Hooked rugs used a ton of scraps and make such great rugs!  I love sitting on a winter night with a good movie and a candle lit and working on a rug.  I took a class at a local quilt shop that taught how to use strips of fabric, special kind of canvas and a locker hook to make rugs.  A lot of the quilt shops in the area have the kits and books.  I think the title is something about  a "Happy Hooker"  Wink  I also cut up scraps into 2 1/2 and 5 inch squares to make charm quilts out of.  My girls are both learning to sew and having a big stack of 5 inch squares has let them create many doll blankets.

I'm going through a "yo-yo" faze myself. Cut the left overs into circles and make a yo-yo quilt!

I love making wonky log cabin blocks from my scraps.  I combine all sorts of fabrics in my blocks and it all works out just fine.  I don't use a foundation.  I've found you really don't need to.   Here's a tutorial for how I do mine.  http://tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com/2008/04/for-dana-wonky-log-cabin-block-tutorial.html
I also have a crazy block tutorial which is great for scraps too.

I've debated what to do with my scraps too.  With a little looking around you can find a lot of patchwork projects like bathmats, purses, portions of totes, cards (sew fabric right onto a card is a patchwork design), and of course quilts.  If you're really ambitious you could make double sided quilts.  Just think of it as reversible.  You could patch together flannel on one side and quilters cotton on the other.  I always put flannel on one side of my daughter's quilts so I have one side that will be warmer for her. I also have lots of scraps and also very small one because being reduce-trash fanatic  Wink  I just don't throw away anything.
I use them when I crazy quilt but the last time I made some nice crazy patchwork pencil pouches:
            http://ayalalevinger.blogspot.com/2008/07/tomorrow-we-go-to-camping-for-week.html

I sewn them together and decorated the seams with decorative stitches of my sewing machine. was fun.

Wow!  So many great ideas!  I love all of the different quilt designs - and the patchwork pencil cases are awesome!  Perhaps I will make some as Christmas presents for my students this year....
My Great Aunt recently sent me a pattern for rugs using a "toothbrush needle."  Has anyone tried those?  She says they are a great way to use up scraps too, as well as make use of old clothing.

I've made many many "mile a minute" quilts.  Here's the tutorial- they're super simple:

                http://quiltingisstillmypassion.blogspot.com/2007/07/mile-minute-blocks-photo-tutorial.html

Here are a few of the ones I've made:

I love that you just whack the larger scraps down to strips with a rotary cutter and ruler, and then have at it.  They end up all jumbled and cute, then I square off the edges of each block and put the squares together.  I don't use a foundation, because I like the look when they get a bit uneven as you sew. They're squared off before sewing together, so that means I don't really need something to keep them stable as they're going together.  I think the foundation would help if you don't want that look.

And totally gratuitous cheesy picture of my nieces and nephew with their quilts:

I may never leave my sewing room again after reading this blog!!!  I never realized those blocks were so easy to do, and since I don't like foundation piecing for crazy quilts, I've never been able to come up with a good way to use all my scraps .  Thank you so much for this link!  Well actually, thanks everyone for the entire thread, it's so motivating to see beautiful pictures and know that other sewers are asking the same kinds of questions I am, lol...

Thanks to for the feedback on the need for the foundation, I feel a lot more secure about my already made blocks now :0)

I used flannel scraps from PJs to make a few patchwork quilts.  I also pieced together some to make rice bags with removable flannel covers.  There are a lot of smaller projects you could do using either scraps or pieced together fabric (I used 6x6 squares pieced together).  Small bags, pencil cases, doll clothes etc.

If you jsut want to be rid of it, I would check with local schools and churches.

                    Hi,

I make a lot of bags with my scraps:
Here is one I made recently:
                    http://organizedeveryday.blogspot.com/2008/08/thoughts-on-simple-life-and-tackle-it.html
I think it turned out really well.  I used a paper-piecing log cabin pattern for the front of the bag.

I've thought of sewing some scraps to card stock to make inexpensive greeting cards. Also, I want to cut some into interesting shapes (flowers, stars), and stitch them to bias tape or a ribbon to make a garland for parties (or a reusable lei).

I'm perhaps not the best at hanging on to scraps. I'll analyze the size of the scrap and I will throw away fabric that's too small or whatever. I am hanging on to strips of fabric because I'd like to crochet a fabric rug for somewhere in the house. I think it would be so nice and cozy.

Maybe you should hold a giveaway or something like that.  Maybe a swap?  Lots of people do stuff like that.  You could possibly offer a pound of scraps in return for people sending you something you want or need.  Say a dress for a small child or pajama pants for you.  Trust me, i would LOVE to get some scraps.  Smiley

Like the last poster said... SWAP 'EM!!!

OR you could even sell them.... I know donating is always nice! But people love to buy scrap bundles on eBay or even Etsy! And it's always fun as  a buyer to score a great deal of fun scraps for not a lot of cash!

What do you consider a scrap?

I have some strips of the same material that are just under 3 inches wide and about 10 inches long.  But I don't consider them scraps.

I love the idea of making a charm quilt, see http://www.fabrics.net/charmQuilts.asp
or a bag from selvedge: http://vintagericrac.blogspot.com/2008/03/selvedge-bag.html
or flowers: http://allsorts.typepad.com/allsorts/2005/07/fab_flowers.html here's how to make them: http://mollychicken.blogs.com/my_weblog/2005/07/fabric_flower_t.html
or how about tying your scraps to a wreath ring?

I'm still relatively new to quilting, but I think they used foundation paper so the strips did not have to be cut, just sewn and trimmed.

This won't get rid of the scraps, but if you store fabric scraps in an air lock bag (the ones which you can get the air out and it reduces it to about 1/4 of the size - in Australia they are called space saver bags or or space bags I think). It means you can get a bit of space while you plan your project.

But as an early childhood teacher I like the idea of donating the scraps to preschools or child care centres - we never have enough good craft supplies for the kids.
