What do you do with your scraps?

What do you consider a scrap?

I have some strips of the same material that are just under 3 inches wide and about 10 inches long.  But I don't consider them scraps.

I love the idea of making a charm quilt, see http://www.fabrics.net/charmQuilts.asp
or a bag from selvedge: http://vintagericrac.blogspot.com/2008/03/selvedge-bag.html
or flowers: http://allsorts.typepad.com/allsorts/2005/07/fab_flowers.html here's how to make them: http://mollychicken.blogs.com/my_weblog/2005/07/fabric_flower_t.html
or how about tying your scraps to a wreath ring?

I'm still relatively new to quilting, but I think they used foundation paper so the strips did not have to be cut, just sewn and trimmed.

Thank you so much for that link!  I've been wanting to make some of these flowers for so long but could never find a tutorial that explained it so I could actually understand the concept.  I want to put some pin backs on these and use them as decorations on my clothes and bags and maybe even the curtains in my room, lol.  Thank you!

i'm going to try the scrappy belt this weekend that was featured in the blog a bit back.  Also, i've made some patchwork stripes on towels and such.  I was also thinking about patchwork scarfs for all the in-laws for xmas this year.

I make what I like to call Scrappy Monsters.  They're basically little beanbag (or rice-filled) toys.  They're the perfect tie-on to a baby shower gift.  And such a fun way to use up scraps, extra bias tape, felt, whatever!
You can see some of my monsters here: http://dana-made-it.blogspot.com/search/label/Scrappy%20Monsters

And on a side note...I hope I win some free fabric!!!

This doesn't apply to large scraps, but I put out thread scraps and selvedges for the birds to use in their nests.

I like to make yo-yo's or I also use little pieces in handmade paper.

i use the scraps to applique onto babies'/children's clothes.  i usually do names so they don't have to be huge pieces.

I use a lot of scraps in quilts. But also have made lots of other things. I have made a lot of gift bags and used them for "wrapping" gifts. We use them over and over here. I like to give them outside of the family too. You can use any fabric and some of them suit the gift or recipient. I usually make them drawstring close but sometimes I just make a rectangular (determined by the shape of the fabric pieces I have) bags and tie them closed with a ribbon.

I use my scraps in log cabin blocks as has been discussed already, for a touch of color on burp cloths made from new diapers, dolly quilts, yoyos, crazy quilt projects like handbags, hearts, and eyeglass cases, softies ( like scrappy nation's ), journal covers  and banners.
I saw someone post about letting their children take the smallest nubbins and glue them to a piece of muslin for their own dolly quilt. Very cute.
I have a hard time getting rid of all my scraps because ... you know....I may need them for something in the future...but it gets crazy! One can only save so much. Lately, I did do a clean out. Killed me to do it, but it was worth the extra space I gained.

I am planning on sewing them all together into a big crazy quilt, or I might patch them together to use for kid's clothes.

I actually BUY other people's scraps on Etsy!  LOL!!

                          I have made:

                          wristlets
baby shower invitations  (cut scraps into shape of a baby buggy and sewn on cardstock)
a baby shower gift (a little stuffed owl)

                          I will be making:
A canvas tote bag with flowers appliqued onto it (using scraps)

You can make headbands, luggage tags, dolls, appliqued towels, pouches, appliqed T-shirts, yo-yos, fabric flowers

I plan to use all of my purchased scraps right up. :-)

I've just seen your comment and I'm glad you like the flowers.

                            Gillian.

I keep them in big Rubbermaid totes in the attic - 30 or 40 of them  Roll Eyes They are organized by color, style, seasonal, fiber, etc.

The smaller pieces get cut into 1 1/2" or 2" strips. Those have their own totes, too.

My dream goal is to make a quilt with 2"x2" pieces, none of which are the same... I would absolutely send you an envelope so that you could send me a few scraps.  Smiley
