I would absolutely LOVE a serger, because I'm trying to clean up my act and make my projects look professional! I'm trying to follow in the footsteps of an excellent seamstress in my family who never had the chance to teach me. I'm a self-taught sewer, working full-time, and raising 2 kiddos under the age of 3 (hopefully a 3rd on the way soon!).
I am just beginning to learn the craft of sewing. I love making my toddler daughter little clothes, but so far I have only been able to accomplish patterns that don't require serging or overlock stitching. I have a very basic Singer machine, and it just can't pull off those stitches particularly on knit fabrics. I'm hoping to save up soon for a new sewing machine with some fancy-shmancy stitches and extra bells and whistles. BUT, because I need a new sewing machine, I have to put off a serger.
My Gram was an amazing seamstress. She used to make all of my mom's clothes, including her wedding dress. My mom, just to buck the trend, did not take to sewing. My Gram passed away when I was in the 3rd grade, and never really had a chance to teach me much. I would love to really figure things out and try to replicate some of the clothes she made back in the 40s-70s as we still have many sitting in the cedar chest amongst the moth-balls! I would also love to pass on some heirloom items to my children and grandchildren like Gram did.
I would sooo love to put a more professional touch to some of the things I've been creating! AND I'd love to make some things for myself that don't look totally "home-made." Also, I think I could finally take a chance and try a KNIT fabric!!!
