Apron Fabric

    Apron Fabric

Hi, can you tell me what type fabric you tend to use when making aprons? My MIL wants one and in all my years of sewing, even back in HS, I NEVER made an apron! So, off to look for a cheap, easy pattern, (Joann's has 10 for $10 this week, I think) and fabric, but don't know what's best to use.
    Thanks!

I use cotton to make aprons.  There are some cool retro apron patterns (and retro prints).

Yep, I agree with cotton. I just made one a couple weeks ago and thought that it turned out great with just a single layer of cotton.

Thanks for the advice. Did find some cute green on green striped and got a fat quarter with green background and peach, green and yellow leaves on it for the pockets and orange rick rack for trim. Think for a first time apron, it turned out alright!
          Thanks again!

You need to use cotton but make sures it has a heavy thread count or it won't serve the purpose you want.  Another good choice is twill. It still is a cotton but a heavy weight. You find a lot of ready made aprons are Are made from twill. You can always dress it up with some appliqués or if you have an embroidery machine you can always put a hamburger or the like on it.

If using a cotton make sure you have size 80 universal needles. They will go through all the nhemmingr easily.  If using twill a 90 needle might be best.

I've made several aprons using old tablecloths and I especially like using vintage sheets. Some of the old sheets have lovely coordinating fabric and eyelet or trim on them.  I use this border into as the edge of the apron and I save finishing the lower edge.
