    Gift recommendations for little girl
    on: August 09, 2010, 10:38:53 PM
My friend's daughter, who is 3, Just underwent major reconstructive heart surgery.  She is thankfully doing well and is recovering in hospital right now.  I wanted to whip up something quick to send off to her (and her older sibling maybe too?).

Any suggestions?  I was thinking a special doll or softee or something like that...??  Any other suggestions are welcome too!

What about some fun twirly skirts?  I have 3 little girls who love this kind of stuff.  Sometimes I will buy a t-shirt and do a coordinating applique.

How about some art stuff they can do while in the hospital? There are many crayon roll tutorials. Here's one from our blog: http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=2130

Here's also some links to great softie tutorials as well: http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=2836

Art stuff is a great idea!  There is chalkboard fabric that you could use for something...

I've made pillowcases for people I know in the hospital.  They are much softer than "hospital issued".

Maybe a matching one for her big sister too.

We have a 16 yo friend who just had a cardiac defibrillator implant.  I bought her one of those heart pillows with the hands from Ikea.  You could make something heart shaped and soft like this.  Someone told me it helps when they hold it to their hearts when they cough or laugh after surgery.

Definitely make her a bag to take all of her gifts home!  We took my cousin a bunch of coloring books, etc. for her 3 week stay in the hospital and she already had so much when we got there.  I made her a bag with her initial appliqued to keep the coloring books and crayons in.  You can always fill a handmade bag with fun stuff from the dollar aisle at Target.  School supplies are cheap right now.  Boxes of 24 crayons are a quarter right now.

Clothes that are easy to put on and take off are great. An elastic waist twirly skirt and a tank top would actually be perfect because it would make her feel pretty but it's easy to wear.  You could make her a princess hat and wand?  My cuz got something like that and it was really fun.  I was going to make a hospital gown but we found out they let her wear her own clothes most of the time.  A crayon holder with coloring books is perfect.  A pillow case or quilt is great, but check to see if she has them first.  The first thing my cuz got was a pillowcase and blanket from those Million Pillowcase Challenge type programs.
