Beginner Children's Pattern

    Beginner Children's Pattern
    on: September 21, 2008, 04:02:51 PM
    Hi-

I just discovered this forum!  What a great site.  I am a beginner sewer and just got my first Bernina machine.  I've made some very basic projects, but would like to tackle children's clothes.  I have a 6 month old daughter.  I'm taking a sewing class that starts Tuesday on making a bishop's dress, so that should help me with some basic skills.  Anyway, can anyone recommend a very basic children's pattern from this site?  I love the fabrics sold here and would love to make my daughter something with them.

    Thanks in advance!

The Oliver and S patterns are really cute.  Some of them are more challenging than others.  You can see on the backs if you click larger view for the number of scissors.  That is how they do level of difficulty.

If you are a beginner, I would recommend Samantha's Miss Madeline dress pattern.  You can get it at: http://thehandmadedress.net.  It is really easy and beautiful.

You might want to take a look through SMS's old blog posts for pattern reviews which has a lot of great information regarding the patterns.
Here's the link to the pattern reviews: http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?cat=9

I know that there are several children's clothing patterns in there that you might want to read through.

Good luck and watch out- Sewing for children is addicting!   Smiley

When I was just starting out I did simple projects like the Pillowcase dress and a Smocket.

There are also lots of great easy and straightforward patterns on You Can Make This too.

From patterns available here, I've made Britches & Bloomers, Little Jammies, Little Hip Skirts, and Baby Overalls. Sewing for kids is absolutely addicting!

If you ever want to take on sewing for yourself, I adore the Amy Butler patterns though she doesn't have all that many for clothes.

If you can find one on Ebay, Patrones Ninos magazines have the most fantastic kids patterns I've seen anywhere. I have three issues of it, and I love all the patterns in each.  There are some complicated patterns, but a lot of simple ones too. Here's a really simple v-back dress from an older issue I made this summer for my niece:

I absolutely love the patterns on SugarCityJournal.blogspot.com.  Their servant dress pattern is wonderful and adorable.

I think a pillowcase dress and then something like a children's corner lucy... it will grow your skills but it isn't too tough!
