Robert Kaufman Kona fabric

    Robert Kaufman Kona fabric

Is the quality of this line at places like Joann's quilt store quality? I may sound crazy, but I know that Joann's will occassionaly have a more "designer" type of line in and when you look at it, touch it, love it, clearly it is not printed on the same quality fabric as I find at my LQS. Is this the case with the Kona line? Does anyone know?

I think it's different bolt to bolt.  I picked up 3 pinks today, all Kona, and 2 were fine and 1 one was thin and poor quality.  The stuff I see at the quilt shops is always top quality - it doesn't have the variation.  I've had the same experience at Hobby Lobby, although interestingly enough, their is actually labeled with the Robert Kaufman sticker on it - JoAnn's is not.  I think the problem at my HL is that everyone buys the cheapo stuff and not the Kona so it just sits forever and kind of fades.

I agree there is a difference with the designer ones at JoAnns - I see old Alexander Henry prints there and they are thin, like they are test runs or something, but that doesn't make sense because they tend to only show up after they are a year or two old.  I've found their $8.99 Legacy stuff to actually wash up nicely, nearly as good at the quilt shop stuff.  But at that price you might as well buy designer.

If I have to buy solid at JoAnns, like today when I'm in a hurry and can't order online or drive to the closest quilt shop that has solids (45 minutes away) then I get the Kona from JoAnns if it feels OK.  It's better than their quilter's only solids.  I typically use it for linings of bags or pair it with another not-designer quality fabric (I bought a ton of fabric before I knew better...) so it doesn't matter as much in those situations.

I ordered some Bella (Moda) solids online, and I think I like those better than the Kona.  I actually went through and labeled all of my solids with colors and kind, like "Eggplant Kona" or "JoAnn's Kona Snow" or whatever, before i forgot.  I've been trying to keep track in case I feel like there is a big quality difference, so when I go to make a quilt or something I know what not to use.
