Appliqué Question

    Appliqué Question
    on: September 22, 2010, 08:43:03 AM
Can I appliqué without using the zig zag stitch?  I just want to reinforce my appliqué with a straight stitch.

What do you think?  I am very new at all of this!  Thank you for your help!

I think part of why people use the zig zag is that it can completely cover the raw edge.  If you use a straight stitch you might end up with some fraying.  But depending on what it is, that might give it a fun scrappy look.  I sometimes use the buttonhole stitch on my machine to outline applique and that looks cute too.

Since my machine only does a straight stitch, I applique all the time using it and have no problems. It does fray a little, but if you use wonder under to fuse it to your work, there's very little fraying if any.
