Bamboo/Cotton Batting

    Bamboo/Cotton Batting
    on: May 13, 2008, 10:33:21 PM
    Hi All!
I couldn't find 100% cotton batting recently, so I opted for a bamboo/cotton blend.  I'm still thread basting my quilt, but so far I love this batting.  It seemed to stick a bit to the backing, and was very easy to smooth out.  Does anybody have any experience with this product?  I'm wondering if there is any difference in machine quilting, durability & warmth.
    Thanks!

I've heard through blogs that the bamboo is great.  Just as warm and soft as the cotton and some even say that it's better!  (Elizabeth, http://www.ohfransson.com/, jut made her most recent quilt out of it and loved it as well.)

        Thanks for the shout-out, Irene!

I did LOVE the bamboo batting and it quilted up really well.  It was also a little more pliable and less felt-like after prewashing than the Warm and White (100% cotton) that I normally use.  One thing I will say though is that it produced a TON of lint.  I had to stop and clean out my machine several times just during the course of finishing a small quilt.  I would say that all the good points definitley outweight that inconvenience though!

          Hi!
I just finished a quilt out of this batting, too.  I loved, LOVED working with it.  The quilt is linen front and back, heavily, feather-ly machine quilted, and is so soft and lovely to sleep under.  I noticed the lint thing, too.  I must say, I didn't prewash, and it did shrink quite a bit (although the linen did that, too).  But I wanted a really aged look, so it worked well for me.  But I agree, totally good over bad.

How much did the quilt/batting shrink after you washed it?  I'm thinking of using the batting and I normally don't prewash and was hoping not to this time around as well...

I have used the bamboo pillow inserts. I wouldn't get them again. Within 4 months the pillows were flat. Maybe the blend of cotton and bamboo is better.

I didn't like the bamboo pillow inserts either!  They reminded me of feather pillows -- oddly heavy and didn't keep a shape.

The batting is great though.  Alissa, I'm not sure if anyone ever answered your question about shrinking.  I always wash my batting first, but it didn't seem to me that it shrunk any more than cotton usually does.

Is there much of a price difference between 100% cotton and bamboo/cotton blend?

Yes.  Unfortunately, the bamboo is a lot more expensive.  I think the list price for the Queen batting was $39.99, but I only paid 60% of that because I had a coupon.

I've heard that one of the drawbacks of bamboo is that it doesn't wear as well as cotton.  I don't know whether this is true or not, but it's probably something to consider when making a quilt.  (I suspect it's true based on my experience with bamboo linens from West Elm.)  I'm not someone who makes things with the idea that people will still want to have them 100 years from now, but if you are creating "heirloom" items, that may be something to consider.

                      Gosh,
How much did it shrink. . .?
When I finished the quilt (meaning, it's quilted and bound) it was 84 inches wide.  It is currently 76.  I didn't measure the length of it, so I can't tell you there.  But that gives you an idea of the shrinkage rate.
Still love it, though!  And I don't know what it might do if you pre-washed.

I've been really happy with the Warm & White batting.  Of course, I've only used it twice so far
but it was good for my little projects.  I used it in two baby quilts and was really pleased with how
well it held up in the wash.  There was very little shrinkage for me but I do wash in cold.

The best part for me is that I was able to buy it in the remnant bin at WalMart!

If your local store doesn't have it ,You can buy it directly from a company that makes it called FiberCo inc.

They make a lot of different battings.. Grin

I'll have to give Bamboo/Cotton a go the next quilt I do.  I've been experimenting with different batting and I've decided that while polyester is really easy to use when you're laying the quilt out to be pinned, cotton has a better finished feel to it--softer and warmer.  I'm curious to see how bamboo would affect the end product.
