Help me choose a sewing machine

Help me choose a sewing machine
    on: September 26, 2010, 10:28:17 PM
I am hoping someone can help me choose a sewing machine. I have been sewing on my Grandma's old Singer and have decided to buy my own machine. I had pretty much made up my mind on a Kenmore mechanical machine but now there is a computerized one on sale cheaper. The problem is that I can't find any reviews for the computerized one. Is a computerized machine better or is it just a matter of preference? If it makes any difference I am planning on sewing clothes, toys, blankets, bags/purses, quilts, etc. If you can suggest which one might be better I would really appreciate it.

    Mechanical (Kenmore 16782): http://www.sears.ca/product/kenmore-md-27-stitch-sewing-machine/620-000018598-16782#BVQAWidgetID
This machine comes with a Straight Stitch Foot, Zig Zag Foot, Satin Stitch Foot, Zipper Foot, Automatic Buttonhole Foot, Overedge Foot, Bling Hem Foot, Walking Foot, ¼” Seam Foot & Quilting Bar

    Computerized (Kenmore 19050): http://www.sears.ca/product/kenmore-md-50-stitch-computerized-sewing-machine/620-000018598-19050#BVQAWidgetID
As far as I can tell this machine comes with a Zig-Zag Foot, Zipper Foot, Buttonhole Foot & Satin Stitch Foot

    Thanks, Andrea

Personally, I would go with the computerized one. It's so nice to just push a button for a new function. It also looks like this one comes with more features.

Thanks for the response. I was leaning towards the computerized one since it's cheaper and I thought it was better so I'm glad to hear that's what you recommend as well.

I am hoping to learn how to do free motion quilting. Do you have any experience with this and/or know if this is something that this machine would be capable of?

It should be fine. Just be sure to lower your feed dogs, use a darning foot and turn your tension up a little. Good luck!

Unless the machine has to be brand new, get a better machine used. Pfaff is reliable, strong, and sews through anything in a straight line. Kenmore and Singers are really not that great. I use a 10+ year old Pfaff 1151 IDT (internal top feed) or built in walking foot machine is crazy the best! 3-4 hundred dollars for one now they hold their value too!
My Brother NV4000D sews nicely and is feature rich but that's a embroidery convertible and can be spendy the NV2500 is very nice and a bit cheaper but still out of your range...Just my opinion, I have had Babylock, Singer, Brother and Pfaff machines. some of the others are nice, but you pay too much for a name...

If you can find a computerized Pfaff, you would do well to look into it.  I have a Pfaff Creative 1471, and I would not give it up for anything.  But if you can't find one, go with an electronic, computerized machine of some sort.  I have used a very good Singer also.  If you want to do free motion quilting, make sure you can drop the feed dogs.  Check out my sewing machine post on my blog/website.
