Lap desk top recommendations?

    Lap desk top recommendations?
    on: September 30, 2010, 11:06:09 PM
I am not really sure if this is the best category to post my question but I am trying to make lap desks for my nieces/nephews for Christmas and I am looking for suggestions on what to use as the top portion.
    I am looking for something:
    lightweight
    smooth
that either has a handle already or could have one cut into it
that either has a "catch edge" so pens don't roll off or has the ability to have one attached to it (I am thinking about using bias tape for this?)

I have a hardboard sample which could work but I thought I would look into other options if people have suggestions.

    Thanks!

years ago I bought a couple of these for my kids and they were hand made as well.  The man used 1/8" fiberboard (like thin pegboard is made of) and he laminated Formica on the top.  He then used a router to put a groove near the bottom for pencils to rest....however I glued a piece of the non-loop side of Velcro near the top for added pencil space. This board was fitted to slide over a shallow dishpan so the kids could keep their toys and supplies in there for car trips, church service, etc.  Hope this helps
