Need guidance on machine for apparel

Although I'm buying my first machine (I am just learning), I'm hoping to get something that lasts - not just a 'starter'. There are a myriad choices....machine vs computerized? I don't know that I need every bell and whistle, but I plan to make apparel for myself mostly - maybe a bag or some home decor along the way. But mainly looking for durability and sophisticated-enough apparel options. As for price point I'm thinking up to several hundred bucks but not the $500+ range.

I know you mavens have opinions...lay em on me.

Definitely go with a Janome.  I think they are making the best affordable sewing machines now.

It's a lot to look through, but if you have a couple machines in mind, you will probably be able to find a review of it on this list.
