Bias cut fabric- does it unravel less?

I am wondering if bias cut fabric with unfinished edges is less likely to unravel than fabric cut on the grain.  I have a skirt from Anthropologie that has a ruffle detail made with bias cut fabric without finished edges and while I have washed it many times  it has frayed only a little.  I want to try the same trim on a dress for my daughter but was wondering if there were some tips out there regarding this.  Do I need to use fray check and reapply it periodically?    And is this just an altogether crazy idea that wont work?

Bias-cut fabric frays more than fabric cut on the grain, depending on how wide the particular bias-cut strip is.  they must have treated it, like you said. In fact, the way to make chenille is to cut small strips of bias-cut fabric and sew it on something right down the middle. After a couple of washings it is completely frayed.

However, if the trim is wide enough it won't totally fray away, so it might be worth a try. It would probably have a fuzzy look right on the edges which would look cool.

It really shouldn't fray very much.
What kind of fabric is it?

It is a cotton lawn (Liberty)- I was wary to experiment because its such an expensive faric!  Perhaps I should just cut a small piece and throw it in with the wash a number of times before I try it out.

I love cotton lawn fabric... haven't done bias cuts on it much... I am a rebel with some patterns and do my own thing...so...as far as an unfinished seam to create a bit of a fray look you might think about sewing a straight stitch around the edge to preventing the fray going past a certain point....  I have a Janome 6500Pro and it was a stitch that is used for knits a very tiny zig/straight stitch that comes to mind that I would use, a very tiny zigzag would work too if you wish to go that route, but I think testing it is the best call.

I was taught that cotton cut on the bias doesn't fray.  So far over the last 30 years of sewing, that's proven true.
