    Substituting Knit Fabric
    on: November 07, 2008, 09:38:44 PM
This is probably a stupid question, but I'm still in the beginning stages of sewing, so I think I can be forgiven Tongue

I want to make a top, Simplicity 2733 to be exact and it is sized for knits only. I love the style and I have a non-knit fabric in mind and I'm wondering how hard it would be to convert the pattern to use that instead of using a knit. Is it even possible or should I just suck it up and go and find a knit fabric. If it is only possible to use a knit fabric, are they hard to sew with? I don't have a serger and I've never sewed with anything aside from cotton and cotton/poly blends, so nothing really stretchy.

Knit is forgiving and lays softly which are two points this pattern is relying on.  You can sew this with cotton or poly blend, but you may have sew a size up and it may not look like the picture on the pattern.
There's some blog info out there of people who have sewed fine with knits using a regular sewing machine outfitted with a ballpoint needle and there's even a book (Sew U Home Stretch: The Built by Wendy Guide to Sewing Knit Fabrics) geared to sewing with knits with and without a serger.
I haven't tried sewing with knits at all, but am itching to do so.  My little one needs leggings...
I would love to hear any tips from our forum members!

I really recommend just going for the knits.  I was scared at first, but it really isn't as difficult as you would think.  Just arm yourself with ball point needles and look in your sewing manual.  You'll have to play with the feed dogs or the foot pressure, but really that is the only change.

I have one tip...just make sure that you don't pull the fabric as you sew it.  You don't want your finished product to be all stretched out.   But, other than that just go for it.

I would recommend you find a different pattern that will be more suitable with your fabric because you will not be happy with the results.

Since you really like the pattern though, go ahead and sew it in a knit. Put tissue paper under your fabric as you sew which will make feeding it go much more smoothly. Tissue tears off easily after you sew, too.
