This is probably a stupid question, but I'm still in the beginning stages of sewing, so I think I can be forgiven

I want to make a top,
Simplicity 2733 to be exact and it is sized for knits only. I love the style and I have a non-knit fabric in mind and I'm wondering how hard it would be to convert the pattern to use that instead of using a knit. Is it even possible or should I just suck it up and go and find a knit fabric. If it is only possible to use a knit fabric, are they hard to sew with? I don't have a serger and I've never sewed with anything aside from cotton and cotton/poly blends, so nothing really stretchy.
