You can you really just have to sit and play with it, then once it's set it will be OK. Also, it's important that you use the right kind of embroidery needle. Again this takes some trial and error but I found that helped tremendously. Part of the tension issues are because it's a drop in (top load) bobbin. The stitch quality isn't as good as the kind with the bobbin case. It still shouldn't be looping though. Make sure you completely unthread and rethread both the top thread and bobbin when this happens, since the problem could be in either place. I've also found that my needles literally FALL out half way through the design if I don't tighten them down with the little screwdriver that came with the machine.
You also have to use the right kind of stabilizer. Again trial and error. You might want to use 2 layers. Whether it's correct or not, mine does best with a layer of iron on SF-101 interfacing AND a layer of tear away stabilizer.
You'll be OK. Mine is a combo embroidery and sewing machine and it's much happier as an embroidery machine. I ended up getting a baby Bernina for sewing and just use the Brother for embroidery. That seems to work. My sis-in-law likes to do embroidery and she comes over and uses mine and does OK with it. It likes her better than me, I guess
