Rolled hem on tulle?
on: December 31, 2010, 03:26:11 PM
I am thinking about using my serger to do a rolled hem on some tulle that will eventually become ruffles. I realize that the tulle will not fray but I wanted to do it more to look cute. Given the way tulle is, I wondered if anyone has attempted this.

A rolled hem is a common finish for tulle wedding veils. Try a test piece though, since results will depend on how open your tulle is. Inserting fishing line while stitching gives body and a little wave, which you may like. You could also feed ribbon while doing a one-needle overlock stitch, which could be pretty if the tulle can hold the stitches. You can also straight stitch thin ribbon along the edge. (Or, the easier way is to straight stitch about a half inch from the edge and then trim to the ribbon).
Either way, I’d test the edging AND the ruffles. Putting any finished edge on the tulle will change the lay of the ruffle.
