new here. quilting foot question

    new here. quilting foot question
    on: January 06, 2011, 08:37:32 AM
Hello. I'm new here and relatively new to sewing in general. I got a new Bernina 350PE for Christmas (love it!) and just tried a free motion quilting foot for the first time ever. Is it normal that there's no contact between the foot & the fabric/batting? It just hovers above it. I bought the foot on ebay so can't ask the dealer about it. It's spring-loaded so I can't quite figure out what the point of the foot is if it doesn't hold the fabric down at all or maybe its an ebay joke...?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The free motion foot only holds the fabric in place while the needle is down. Then it raises to allow you to move the fabric in any direction before taking the next stitch. You can only do this when you lower the feed dogs - there is a rectangular button on the right side of my Bernina that you press all the way in to drop the feed dogs, then press again to raise them. You leave them down or off when using that foot.

If you look on youtube for "free motion quilting tutorial" or "stippling tutorial" you'll find videos showing how it works. It takes a lot of practice.
