    NEED HELP PLEASE
    on: January 14, 2011, 12:17:28 PM
Good morning everyone. I am making a zip up jacket for my grandson who is 1yr old. I decided I would like to insert side pockets. I have a handmade pattern for the pocket itself...but need help in installing it. barbara

I think the easiest pockets to do on sweatshirt and knit fabrics is the kind you actually sew on top of the fabric. Just use a faux overlock stitch as edging and it will look great!  I use this method for pants and jackets and it turns out fabulously each time. You can  edge the pocket opening with ribbing to make it look really professional.

Hi - this is how you would put pockets into the side seam of a garment.

First you need to sew the pocket piece to the jacket body piece right sides together using a 3/8" seam (assuming you are using the standard 5/8" seam allowance).

Press the seam toward the pocket.
Then sew the jacket side seam RST down to the pocket, around the pocket, and down the remainder of the seam.

Turn right side out and you have a pocket in the side seam!
        Hope this helps!
