Making Curtains and Valances

    Making Curtains and Valances
    on: January 14, 2011, 05:09:23 PM
Can anyone recommend a good book on making curtains and valances?  I have made some simple valances but I am looking to spruce up a couple rooms in my house and would like to do some more interesting window treatments.  I am looking for a good book!

Sunset Publishing has a book ~ Curtains, Draperies & Shades ~ that has some nice ideas and step by step instructions... The one I have is quite old but if it's not around still, hopefully there is an updated version.

Singer also has a line ~ Sewing Reference Library ~ Sewing for the Home..

Your local fabric store should have a selection of books that you can browse through before buying.

I've made many many curtains and blinds for myself, friends and customers over the years and I think the books I've used the most are Singer Sewing For the Home and Singer More Sewing for the Home.  Dated but good step by step instructions.  I own Curtain Bible by Katrin Cargill's as well.  It is beautiful and inspiring.  From time to time I've also referred to The Encyclopaedia of Curtains Merrick & Day for ideas as well.
Perhaps you should check your local library and if they don't have many drapery books maybe they can order them in.
        Hope this helps,

Thanks to both of you for the great information!  We have an incredible new upholstery fabric shop in town (most fabrics are ten dollars and they are gorgeous, new, designer fabrics) and I have just made a new valance and cafe curtain for my powder room.  I am really happy with the results and I cannot wait to get going on the rest of the house!  (I have already warned my friend that her house is next.)

That's great! Curtains and window treatments are my specialty and if there's anything new that you'd like to try, and then find you need some help, just ask and I'm more than happy to help  Smiley

Another good resource for window treatment tips is the M'Fay Patterns site, they sell patterns but also have a tip of the month section.. There's quite a lot of helpful info there...
