what type of needle for stretch denim/stretch cotton?

I'm sewing little girl's pants with a stretch denim (using a universal needle) and my needle keeps sticking and pulling threads from the fabric up from the bottom.  I tried switching to a new needle and adjusting the tension.  Should I be using a ball point needle because there is stretch in the fabric?  I previously had this problem with a woven cotton that had some stretch to it.

I would try a ball point needle or one that specially calls for stretch fabrics. I have found that there is a difference between the 2.

If it is a knit cotton use a ball point needle.  If it is a spandex use a sharp.  Lycra you need to punch through and knits you need to push away.
