2 Quilt tops. One unexperienced girl.

2 Quilt tops. One unexperienced girl.

My husband brought home 2 quilt tops his grandmother did, with the idea that since I sew, I can finish them (Her quilting days have passed).  We already have one quilt in the pattern that she made us - it's a fan pattern.  I've never quilted before, but last night got this ingenious to me idea of putting them together to make one, as I have to admit, quilting 2 is daunting.  I figured before I did this though, I'd seek others opinions,  preferably those with more experience at quilting than me.  Is there something in particular I should look out for before I do this?  Is this a bad idea?  Should I consider quilting by hand instead of machine?  I have a walking foot, so figuring out how to use that shouldn't be too much of a problem, but I realize it might turn out better if I do it by hand.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this are welcome.

Do you mean make one the front of the quilt and the other the back? I think that's brilliant! I have a bunch of quilt tops that my grandmother sewed (by hand) but that's it. I am going to machine quilt the tops that are similar in color - that way the thread on top and bobbin thread can be the same.

The only thing - if the patterns aren't the same it will depend on how you want to quilt it. Can't really do in the ditch if one is large squares and the other isn't. But - I still love the idea. If you are going to do free motion quilting it would be fine.

Good luck and make sure you post pictures if / when your quilt is finished.  Beth

That is exactly what I mean!  It's the exact same pattern, in two different colorways that will go together I think.  I'm going to look for a fabric to tie the two sides together to bind it with to help it flow.  I will be sure to post pictures.  Thanks!

Wow, sounds like a neat idea!  Your walking foot will work for quilting mostly straight lines.  If the patterns has a lot of curves, you would be better off with a free motion quilting foot!
