Stitching in the ditch

    Stitching in the ditch
    on: April 01, 2011, 02:46:46 PM
    Hi,
I've never really done any stitching in the ditch. Are there any feet that might be useful for this? Any other tips would be great! Thanks.

I suggest going slow. You may want to pick-up your speed because you are just stitching in the the same line, but I think it looks bad if you veer off your seam too often.
No special feet are necessary. Go for it!

When I do in the ditch stitching, I try tug on the fabric on both sides of the seam line.  This helps "bury" the stitch so it is slightly hidden.  Wink

Great, thanks for the suggestions! I did both of the suggested things- went very slow (and took breaks) and pulled a little, although I was nervous about that. My instinct was to stitch slightly to the left of the seam because I was afraid of catching, but stitching slightly to the right of the seam actually seemed tow work better. I also found that pressing down back over the seam seemed to help. I think it worked out pretty well, but kind of nerve wracking!

Not sure what machine you have but Bernina just came out with an edge plate for their walking foot.  It is made for stitching in the ditch.  I'm not sure if other brands have the same thing.  I also think that there is a foot specifically for stitching in the ditch but obviously you don't need it.

I have found that using the walking foot was the best tool. Of course, when you put your layers together you should have had the bottom layer/backing very taunt. This will help with reducing overlaps in the back.
