Cotton applique to knit fabric

    Cotton applique to knit fabric

    Hello,
I have appliqued cotton to cotton but would like to dress up a few tank tops/tshirts for summer. Can someone provide me a good tutorial on cotton applique to knit fabrics? Thank you!
***Update*** I read the tutorial from Sew Mama, so essentially you just need to use a tear away stabilizer when sewing on knits?  Also- what type of needle should I use?  What stitch works best..zig zag, satin?

I'd use a universal needle since you're going through two different types of fabric.  It's not a bad idea to do some tests with stitches on scraps of fabric to get a good idea for what to use around the edges.  A satin stich is just a modified zigzag, but a decorative stitch could be interesting too.

For a stabilizer, I like to use Heat and Bond II which makes your applique essentially an iron-on patch.  I really like it because the appliques do not move at all once you've ironed them on, so they won't shift around on you when you're stitching around the edges.  Have fun experimenting!

I recently discovered Wonder Under. It's super-thin and irons on easily. Gives the applique just a little more stability to sew on neatly.

Make sure you pre-shrink both the top and the applique before you attach the applique - they may shrink at different rates and pucker when you wash the finished item if not preshrunk. Shocked
