Adding ease to a skirt lining

Adding ease to a skirt lining
    on: May 05, 2011, 04:01:22 AM
I am making an A line skirt in linen with a side zip and a faced waistline rather than a wasitband,  and I want to line it.  I want a bit of ease in the lining to make it comfortable to sit down in.  My ideas are: a pleat in the back and front of the lining or, making it slightly bigger than the skirt and running a gathering thread round the top before attaching it, just enough to give it some room, not enough so it has any fullness in it, the same way a set in sleeve is gathered (but does this only work because the seams are curved?).  Your opinions are much appreciated.  Its for my mother in law who thinks that home sewing can't look as good as professionally manufactured so I want to prove her wrong!

I have never done this but my guess would be that the pleat idea would work better than the gathering, because I imagine it would lie more neatly when the extra give isn't needed (when you're standing).  Looking forward to hearing what you end up doing and how it works out!

When I have lined a skirt, I make the lining slightly smaller.  This protects the skirt material from wrinkles?  I sew the lining together, then attach the lining at the waist.
I do not understand why extra ease in the lining is going to help, with the problem or reason you have given?

You could cut the skirt lining on the bias, and then it will have some extra ease. Cheesy
