how far apart can the quilting lines be?

how far apart can the quilting lines be?

I am in the process of machine-quilting a small baby quilt (actually the SMS charm squares baby quilt by Oh Fransson!)  I want to do lots of straight-line quilting - but all in one direction.  The lines are not going to be that far apart but I will end up with lots of long columns.  I'm using Warm and White batting which says that you can leave gaps up to 10 inches.  My question is - does this mean 10 inches square?  Or just 10 inches in any direction.  The columns of unquilted fabric will be the height of the quilt (i.e. about 31 inches) but the lines themselves will be quite close together.  I hope that makes sense.  Thanks for the help!

The way you describe the quilting you would be doing will be just fine.  I do understand the warm and white quilting guidelines to mean 10" square.
