Button hole foot and large buttons

    I have used the auto button hole foot on my machine a number of times very successfully, however I have now come across a problem.
    I need to create a buttonhole for a button too large to fit into the mechanism and from what I can tell (trial and error as well as looking in the manual) I can't machine sew a buttonhole without a button being placed in the foot mechanism. Does anyone know a way round this please?

      You could just mark your hole size & placement and do it manually. I've done that a few times.
      You set the zig-zag stitch length and width to the size you like and just sew 2 parallel lines and then a few quick stitches at the ends. It might be hard to get uniform holes if you need to make a series of them, but most of the time it works fine.

            Dear Irene,
              Just to (update)let you know, I finished doing the six button holes on my sailor pants ! Thanks to you,they came out very nicely. I'm so thankful and so happy !
