Raincoat Fabric - Online?

    Raincoat Fabric - Online?
    on: November 30, 2008, 10:46:42 PM
Hi SMS Readers!  I want to make a raincoat with some personality, so I wanted to use a more wild fabric than your standard khaki (though I may use that too).  What I want to know is, does anyone know of a good online resource for raincoat fabric?  What type of fabric (besides pleather and vinyl) are good for raincoats?  Could I just use a vinyl iron on (I saw some next to the bolts of interfacing at Joanne's) and put that on any fabric?  I don't particularily want a vinyl glossy sheen, more of a satin finish.  Thanks for any help you can give!!!!

You can use oilcloth and tablecloth fabric. That can be found at Joanne's but you can get some really nice oil cloth designs online.

I honestly don't know where to buy this online...but I bought Goretex fabric to make raincoats from (which I still haven't done).  I like it because it's breathable while being waterproof.  Maybe google goretex fabric?

one of my local quilt shops carries a few vinyl coated (and really awesome print) fabrics by moda.  they're on rolls and they have examples of things to sew next to it, including some amy butler bags.  they have an online store - not sure if it's listed, but you can always email them and get some.  www.sewcontempo.com

You might check out The Rain Shed.

                www.rainshed.com

They are a great source for fabrics for outer & sportswear.  You can't order online but you can call your order in.

Good luck!  I'd love to see what you come up with.

Ooops.  I posted the wrong URL.

                  The correct URL is:

Squee!!  Thanks SMS members.  These are all fabo suggestions.  My mother-in-law bought me some khaki raincoat fabric for Christmas... I think I'll doll it up with some piping, rad buttons, and some awesome liner.  This will not be the only raincoat though.  I will definitely check Etsy, along with your other suggestions.  Thank you all so much. Cheesy
