Need help with cravat

    Need help with cravat
    on: September 03, 2011, 07:33:07 AM
    Hello,
Well, I have searched and searched for a pattern to us to make one of these men's cravat ties

I have made a paper template, but I am concerned the face of the tie will not lay flat.  Do I need to add darts, or pleated creases on the curve of the neck? Any suggestions would be great!

Not an expert by any means, but I would clip the seams well and make it the front triangle section separate from the side/back and join them with a seam that would be about at the shoulder.  How does it fasten in the back?

Thanks for your reply!  I am still a little fuzzy on your description though.  The tie fastens in the back with velcro.  The picture looks like the tie is all one piece. I was thinking the same thing you were about making two seperate pieces, but really wanted to try to make the tie all one piece.

I was just thinking that to make it lie nicely, do one main center piece that is the triangle part that is seen.  I think that part would go up over the collar bone/under the shirt collar to rest at the shoulders, where a shoulder seam would go.  Then two pieces that are mirror images that join that and go around the back to fasten.  It seems like that would help it lie nicely.  In a way, what you want to make is the basic shape (not the triangle part but the fact that it lies around the neck and over the shoulders) as a shirt, except it fastens in the back rather than the front.  So just my thinking but it seems that there would need to be seams at the shoulders to give it the right shape and make it lay nicely under the collar.  *Disclaimer* I could be totally wrong about all of this! Cheesy

Thanks so much...that sounds like that will work. I am going to try just that with my scrap fabric.  I will let you know how it goes!

Still working on it...wish I had a pattern!  Can't get the triangular front to lay quite flat...will keep working on it.
