Stitch Width moving around during zig-zag

Stitch Width moving around during zig-zag

So very frustrated!  I have a ten year old White, that actually sat in a box never used until I finally started sewing this July.  I have been doing about 1-2 projects a week with no real problems. Just recently I tried to applique some fabric squares to a pillow I was making using a zig-zag stitch.  I didn't even get a 1/2" in before I started having problems.  I was putting the stitch width at 3 and the stitch length at about 1, and within seconds the stitch width dial would rotate around to 5 (highest it goes on my machine). I tried over and over, but it kept doing that.  I even pulled out some scrap fabric to test different settings -- increasing the stitch length, stitch width, etc -- but found it just would not stay "seated" on zig-zag beyond #1 width.  On zero i.e. a straight stitch, it does not have this problem.

I took the machine to a very well-respected machine repair guy.  Just got it back and he said it was a great machine, to never get rid of it.  It had no problems he could replicate.  In fact, he tried to say in his nicest manner that if there was any problem with that machine, it was user error. I even received the test stitching he did showing perfectly fine zig-zag stitches.   But as soon as I got it home and tested it, there it went again!  I tried even putting it on the floor to test it out in case my table was vibrating so much it was making the dial move.  It still crept.

So...any suggestions?  I know I should call that repair shop back but it was a major hassle to meet him and pick it up again due to distance. Is there something I can easily tighten myself?  DH says I could just tape it to where I want it while using it...mmmm, well he's right, but I'd prefer to have a more firm fix Wink

If it helps the stitch width is a horizontal dial/disc sitting on the front face of the machine towards the top.

    Thanks you so much!

You have now discovered what many of us have learned through bitter experience, reliable, knowledgeable sewing machine repair people are very, very rare.  White Sewing Machine Company was sold in 1986.  Long story short, over the years it has been acquired and re-sold.  It is now part of SVP.
Presumably, you still have the warranty card when you purchased the machine.  Call  1-800-446-2333 and request factory service.  The former White headquarters is now:
      VSM Sewing, Inc.
      31000 Viking Parkway
      Westlake, OH , 44145-1019
