Bag and lining construction - advice please.

Bag and lining construction - advice please.
    on: October 22, 2011, 12:52:31 PM
     Huh

    Dear all,

I'm a newbie to the site and was wondering if anyone had any pearls of wisdom to instill in me with regards to making a make-up bag (boxy type) and keeping the lining smooth.

I read somewhere that you need to adjust your seam allowances to compensate for the give in the bag.

    Hope that makes sense??

I've made a few and all my linings look a little on the lame side, compared with the bags themselves, which I think don't look that bad.

i feel that I'm letting my work down but don't know what to do to solve it.

Any tips or help is greatly received.

    Love

What type of lining are you using? Is it slippery?  Can you post a picture of your project - that may help to figure out what is causing the problem.

I'd love to be able to help!

My advice is to make sure that your seam allowance for your bag and lining are the same, otherwise you can run into trouble. My other tip is to turn through the lining and then pin it in place down inside the bag, press the top edge and then top stitch the edge to hold the lining in place. Linings will never look as good as the bag front, but don't worry too much because they are rarely seen!
Oh and also choose a softer, lighter weight fabric for the lining. Hope that helps.

I have found that the linings tend to straighten out a tad after being used.  I agree that you want to use the same seam allowance.  Also, iron after each step.  Good luck!
