sewing with Suede

    sewing with Suede

I need some tips on sewing with Suede.  My first attempt at sewing suede to suede brought on shifting a bit as i ran it through the machine.  (i have a brother nx-2000)  also i am sewing suede to a home dec weight fabric with an overlay and with the suede on the bottom it stay taught (of coarse) but the fabric above seems to stretch out.  I can't seem to figure how to ease it back without puckering it.  I am new to sewing and am helping a friend make this headboard and it is way over our head.  any suggestions or direction to where i can learn more about sewing with suede would be so helpful!  thanks

Let me start by saying I've never actually sewn suede myself, but I'm wondering if it's similar to sewing leather. I've actually never sewn leather either, but I just finished reading some tips about working with it.

You mentioned that the suede is stretching on top. You might want to try lightening the pressure of your presser foot (if your machine allows it) and see if that helps. Also, from what I read about working with leather, it's recommended that you use a teflon or a walking foot in your machine to make the leather feed more easily.

You should treat suede like leather--so either use a teflon foot or a roller foot or whatever equivalent your machine uses.

My guess is that the suede is sticking as it is going under the feed dogs so the other fabric is stretching.  A roller or teflon foot will help, but it might still stick.  You can place tissue paper underneath the fabric.  This will help it go through the feed dogs smoothly.  The needle will perforate the paper too so it'll just tear off after it has served its purpose.

I would also try to sew with the suede on top.  It's more stable than the home dec fabric probably is, and it's generally a good idea to put more stable (that is less likely to stretch) fabric on top and less stable fabrics next to the feed dogs during construction.  It seems counterintuitive to do this, but it really will help.  Good luck.

thank you for everyones info.  I do not have a teflon foot but I do have a walking foot and that has worked great so far with the suede on suede.  I have not tried it with the home dec fabric yet but plan to soon.  I will report back how it worked.
