Help with quilt batting

    Help with quilt batting
    on: November 27, 2011, 07:58:22 PM
I'm currently working on a twin quilt for my daughter.  This is the largest project I've worked on so far (mainly do throws and baby quilts).  I've always used poly batting for my quilts but since this will be used as bedding, is there a better/warmer option?  Is cotton better?  It seems much thinner.  This will be washed often, I'm sure, so durability is a must.  I plan on getting this quilt professionally quilted as well.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Needled cotton batting is thicker than regular cotton batting and it's very lovely to work with.  You can also get high loft poly batting.  I don't think you'll find much difference in warmth between poly and cotton, but the quilt top will have a much nicer feel to it with the cotton under it than the poly will.  Honestly, if you're going for warmth, I'd get a twin comforter from the thrift store and treat that as your batting.  That will definitely be warm and lofty, and it will hold up to the rigors of the laundry.  If you went that way, I'd tie the quilt instead of quilting it though.

I always use Warm and Natural or Warm and White batting.
It is very durable and can be washed often.  When I quilt I keep my stitching about 2 inches apart.  Very warm and it does not weigh down your quilt.  I used to use poly but I don't like the feel of it and it sends little threads of poly through the quilt top and backing if you use the quilt made with it.

I always use cotton, wool bamboo batting for my quilts. There are lots of option on the market which can make things confusing. I have written an article outlining some of the batting options for quilt makers. Your choice of batting depends on the end use and your method of quilting. Here is the article if you would like to read more, hope you find it useful. http://stitchingcow.com/about/useful-resources-and-articles/quilting-tips/quilt-batting
