Advice-good machine for making handbags?

    Advice-good machine for making handbags?
    on: April 22, 2012, 11:21:15 AM
I've been pretty happy with my Brother machine, but I'm selling handbags, and I sometimes feel like a heavier duty machine might make my life a little easier. Any ideas on a good machine for this kind of work?

Are you using fabric or other fibers, such as leather or canvas? I might consider a gear driven vintage machine.

Sailrite makes a machine for heavy duty sewing (Sailrite.com). I just got one for projects like webbing etc. I haven't done a lot with it but like it so far.  If you are using canvas, leather etc you might look at this type of machine.

Thanks! I'm actually just using fabric at this time. I have worked with some canvas, but mostly the lightweight kind.

I too am considering another machine for my bag making.
I have been reading about the vintage Singer 401A.
Anyone have one and can you recommend this machine.

I think any older heavy duty machine would be fine. I also make bags and purses and use a Viking 990. It's over 25 years old and works great sewing through many interfaced layers and straps. I hardly ever have an issue. I work mostly with cottons and military uniforms. At times, though, I'm sewing through 12 layers with a few of them being interfaced. I borrowed a Kenmore from a friend of mine, once, and it worked great, also!

Well .I am also using a brother sewing machine.I did not try any brand yet.So all I can recommend is to try their other machines that fit your needs.
