Fabric use restriction?

    Fabric use restriction?
    on: May 08, 2012, 05:46:56 PM
I bought some fabric and didn't notice until later that, in the selvage, it says something like "sold for noncommercial, in-home use only." I assume that means I can use the fabric to make things for myself/family/friends, but I can't make things to sell. Is this correct? I have never noticed such a message on fabric, before.

If anyone can shed some light on this, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks so much!

Yes.  Almost anything that is a licensed image (i.e. Disney characters, the coca-cola logo) and some other designers restrict the use of the fabric so that it is for personal use by an individual and you can't profit from selling items with their artwork, logo, etc.

Thank you so much for your answer!

I apologize for not posting this message of appreciation, sooner. I don't get on the computer very often, anymore, and it's rather a pain to post/write EMs via phone, so I get behind on electronic correspondence.

I can understand that fabric designers, as artists, perhaps would not want others to profit from their talents. But it seems that if their fabrics could be incorporated into items made for sale, rather than only for personal use or gifts, the fabrics would reach a wider audience.

I am appreciative and respectful of such limitations and concerns, though, so certainly will not cross the line. But I'll probably buy less of such fabrics, knowing that my scraps usage will be restricted. (Plus, I'll have to be sure to keep up with which fabrics carry this restriction. Since I'm not so great at keeping up with things, I'd just as soon not add another to the list.  Tongue )

        Thanks, again, for your help!

It may be possible to buy a license from the entity that holds the restriction. You'll usually need lots of money, so you'll have to make lots of money on whatever product you sell. All those college logo items you see everywhere? Most are illegal.

Lucky to have read this post. Most of my work is for personal use only but I'll be careful when buying fabrics then for future purposes. If i got better in sewing maybe I can have a small business.  Smiley and this info is important. Thanks
