Patching a hole in denim
on: May 09, 2012, 12:19:06 PM
Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me with this. My daughter has a hole on her jeans where her thighs are and Its grown to be a rather large hole. I'd just assume call it a loss but they're her "favorite" pair of jeans and its in a area that is not visible when its worn.
Any ideas on how to patch this up? Is about a 1.5" x 1" size hole.
Any help is much appreciated. Didnt know where else I could post this.....

You can simply cover it with a patch with some cotton fabric the same colour as the denim, cut it the same size as the hole plus a 1/4" and press the raw edges to the back then place the patch over the hole and do a simple whipstitch by hand around the edge. Or you could use a cute printed fabric, might look unique haha

any sewing store also sells iron-on denim patches...in my perhaps not entirely misspent youth I spent many hours hand-sewing patches from old flannel shirts onto the knee holes in my Levis listening to Grateful Dead records -- yes, records! Thanks for ending me on a trip down memory lane by your question....

Ah! The saving of the child's favorite pair of jeans.
Every mother's chance to be a hero!
To minimize the visibility of the patch, attach it to the inside of the jeans. Using a patch from a similarly colored fabric or an un-savable pair of jeans usually works.
Baste the patch in place by hand using denim colored thread.
Plug in a good movie and carefully hand stitch the edges of the hole (if frayed, the threads are usually white) to the patch to prevent any further "expansion" of the hole. Then reinforce with more stitching 1/4" and 1/2" from the edge of the hole.
If the child is particular about how the patch looks, very small hand stitches will seem to disappear into the surrounding denim.
If additional "strength" is needed for the patch - machine stitching with denim thread will add support - but the stitching will show.
Dabbing on a bit of "Fray Check" also helps prevent hole expansion, but try it on the inside hem of the jeans first. It can stain the denim a bit darker (which can look like a wet spot)
I keep a pair or two of old un-savable jeans in my sewing pile just for patching!
