Need help with Camera Lens Bag

Need help with Camera Lens Bag
    on: May 11, 2012, 01:00:01 PM
Hello, I am new here!  I need to preface my questions with the fact that I am not a seamstress (or whatever the male equivalent would be), I am an engineer that likes to sew and make things.  I have never had any formal training or even informal training, I just started trying things.  I have made several things that have turned out very nice and have been useful.  Onto my current project:

I am making some bags/cases for individual camera lenses that can either be worn on a belt or with a shoulder strap.  They are going to be made of orange rip-stop nylon lined with multiple layers of felt for padding.  The shape of the bag is going to be a simple cylinder with a zippered "flip top".  I plan to use heavy nylon straping to reinforce all of my seams as well as for use on the interfaces to the belt clips.  I have a plan for how I am going to do everything except the ends of the cylinder.  I am going to make the individual pieces (bottom disc, top lid, and a flat piece rolled to make the cylinder.  So here are my questions:

    1. How should I go about sewing the bottom disc to the "body" of the cylinder?  I want to use the nylon strap folded over the seam to both hide the seam and add strength, but I don't know how to go about making this stitch.

    2. I want to have the zipper lid overlap the top of the "body" of the cylinder by an inch or 2.  Should I try to sew this on before I sew the body into a cylinder (when it is still a flat sheet) or afterward.  For ease of stitching I think doing it first would be best, but I am concerned that it will not line up well that way.  If I assemble the lid and the body with pins, then sew it I am confident that it will line up properly but I am concerned that I will struggle to fit everything onto my sewing machine without having problems (not sewing straight due to things catching, material being damaged by having to fold it out of the way, etc).

Does anyone have any words of wisdom or an online tutorial, or personal experience that you could share with me?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
