Child's sari pattern?

    Child's sari pattern?

My 6 year old would like to be this 'Indian Princess' for Halloween.

I have looked for pattern in the Halloween costumes (Simplicity, McCall's, etc.) but can't find anything.  Before I spend a good chunk of time working on a pattern, does anyone have one or have suggestions?  Thanks!

I have never sewed a sari, but I grew up in India, so here are my 2 cents ...

First, I should tell you that it is not traditional for pre-pubescent girls to wear saris.  They wear half-saris.  However, if that does not matter to you, a sari has 3 components:  choli, petticoat, and sari. There might be patterns out there now that you know those terms, too.

The petticoat is a basic cotton slip with drawstring waist.  It must be drawstring to hold up the sari, which gets tucked into it.

The choli Is just a snug top which ends below the bust.  The sleeves are usually short, though sleeveless is lpossible too.  They typically are hook-and-eye closure up the front, where they are covered by the sari end that gets tossed over the shoulder.  You could use the top of a snug dress pattern to replicate a choli.

The sari itself is just a long piece of fabric.  I believe it is 6 meters for adults.  The width of the fabric is basically the distance from the waist to the floor.  It gets tucked into the petticoat at the Baer layer, one go around, starting at the side.  Bring it around again.  Take the amount of fabric that you want to hang over the shoulder and toss it over the shoulder.  Pleat the remaining fabric then tuck that into the petticoat too.  Done.

Google "How To Wear a Sari" for videos and illustrated instructions.  If she doesn't want to wear the sari again, you can use the fabric in a multitude of ways!

      Enjoy!
