Serging pattern pieces

    Serging pattern pieces

I frequently hear people talk about serging pieces of fabric once the pattern is cut but before you start sewing.  This makes a lot of sense but what do you do about the notches and markings that are usually clipped along the outside of pattern piece?

I mark them with tailors chalk. Just a little line or someting where the notch would be. Some dark fabrics don't take the white tailors chalk so well, so I like to use a sliver of dried soap as a marker for dark fabrics.

Yes very true. I also do it.
Should you  buy a sewing machine?

My older sister taught me this tip from her seamstressing days:  Instead of making a notch, make a tiny clip [1/8"] into the piece.
