Walking Foot Woes

    Walking Foot Woes
    on: January 07, 2009, 10:41:51 AM
I've managed to install my walking foot so that it works, but the bar doesn't walk along the fabric as it's done when I've used it before. The result is tight little tiny stitches instead of normal length ones.  It's been a year since I needed to use the walking foot, so I honestly don't remember how I made it work before. What do I need to do?

    I have a Janome DC 2007.

I'm new to machine quilting and just bought a walking foot for my machine, but it's big and bulky and when I've done a few searches on line I see that some feet look much different and would allow me to better see the fabric directly below the needle. Are there lots of different kinds of walking feet? I assumed they would all be pretty similar. Thanks, Kim

I am seeing smaller walking feet on newer machines,  Some are mostly clear too, which is nice.

Elizabeth- I have a Bernina so this might not be helpful, but I have seen this same issue with my foot too.  The problem in my case was that there is a separate arm to the walking foot (all these body parts makes it sound like a sewing machine murder scene!).  The arm has a hook that fits around the knob where the needle screw is.  Mine was not seated on there properly and once I took it off, reset the arm and then slid the foot back on, the problem was solved.

I seem to remember when I used it when I actually was working on a quilt, it was okay.  I think the project I was using it on this time was just too small to engage the walking mechanism properly.  I'll keep fiddling with it.

I was having problems with my walking foot too and I took it into my quilt shop when I had my machine serviced and they took it apart, oiled it and now it's working perfectly.
