adding ruffles to jeans
on: January 09, 2009, 04:53:39 PM
Is anyone willing to share their tips on adding a ruffle to a pair of jeans. I tried this once on my own and they didn't hold up well. I am not great at sewing but have made some outfits for my daughter when she was little. I am interested now in embleshing t-shirts and putting a ruffle on short or jeans to match. I learn best with pictures if anyone knows a site out there that has them. THANKS!

cut the bottom hem off the jeans first
I use 2 strips of fabric for the ruffle.
Each 1 1/2 times longer than the width of the bottom of the jeans. (front facing side)
Then I connect the two ruffle pieces to make a circle.
I hem the bottom of the ruffle.
Then stitch two gathering threads on top.
I pin the side seams of the ruffle to the side seams of the jeans. With the right sides together.
Then gather the ruffle and pin it on jeans.
I sew and finish the seam.
Turn the ruffle down and topstitch with navy thread to hold the ruffle down.
Hope that makes sense

Thanks for the pointers. I'd like to try this for some of my daughter's stuff.

Heres another option with ribbons. You can also use the same method with a fabric ruffle. This gives your inside a nice look too. I made a pair of these for my daughter a few years ago and numerous people commented on how cute they were.

Good luck!
