Resources for Wool Felt

    Resources for Wool Felt
    on: January 18, 2009, 12:06:33 AM
Hi there! Every once in awhile I do a sewing project with felt, and I've recently been interested in using wool felt (rather than the thin cheap craft felt at the store). Does anyone know of any good online places to order it, or (even better) a local store that keeps it? I live in Denver, Colorado.

    Thanks!

Another option to consider is to check out thrift stores for wool blazers.  I found a bright turquoise 100% wool blazer for about $3, and it probably has 2 good yards of usable material.  It's a nice option especially if you're doing just little projects with it.

Thank you so much for all the great resources and ideas (I love the idea of thrifting a wool blazer!) I definitely have some great options now - thanks!

I too have been buying 100% Wool blazers at the thrift. When you get them home, wash them in the washer a few times on hot. Then dry in the dryer on hot. You should end up with some pretty awesome homemade felt!

Thanks so much for all these resources - I too am looking for 100% wool felt instead of the 'blends' that pill and wear thin.  I was wondering if anyone had ordered a good pale 'skin tone' wool felt and could tell me which one it was?  It's so hard to tell on a computer monitor!  Undecided

I made a wool-felt tote bag about a year ago and bought the wool felt at JoAnn's. They had a wide selection of colors. I am not sure if they will have the color you are looking for in 100% wool felt. My bag has held up pretty well over the last year. There is a little bit of pilling on the side that I carry against my body, but I think that's pretty unavoidable. I'm curious to know what type of projects you do in wool felt.

I also have bought wool felt from Joanns. (I feel like I can't mention that name around here:) ) It seems pretty good to me, but I haven't seen any other type so I don't have anything to compare it to.

There was a web site that had kits for beautiful wool felt table runners and wall hangings and also sold wool felt, but now I cannot find them.  Does anyone know of such a web site?

Our JoAnn's actually carries some wool felt, but the color selections are not always the best.  The colors they have are good colors, but if you want something specific, you might be out of luck because they might not have it.
