Ruching

    Ruching

Does anyone have a good technique for ruching (spelling) a bodice of about 22 inches wide by 12 inches tall. I want to ruch gather the bodice of a spagetti strap dress in silk crepe and the gathering is rather large.  I don't want any stitching showing. How should I stabilize the gathers so they stay?

Is there just one layer of fabric?  If not, you might want to consider lining the bodice so that you can tack it down every so often with a single stitch.  This will allow the fabric to have natural looking gathers and the stitches should be somewhat hidden between the folds.
I made three bridesmaids dresses this fall with rushing in the middle.  This is what was suggested in the pattern.
