Help! Brother innovis-10 anniversary machine

I got this lovely new machine for christmas but at first I was scared to use it. Having finally plucked up the nerve and read the manual I decided to get started.
However I can't get the upper thread threaded the thread take up lever doesn't seem to come out far enough! Is it just awkward, is there some trick I should no or am I just being stupid?
