Help with a Project, possibly quilting?

Help with a Project, possibly quilting?
    on: May 29, 2008, 04:03:37 AM
I have a project in my head, but I'm too new to sewing to work out exactly how to do it. I have some basic questions about my idea.   I need to create some pancake like objects.  I would like these to have a little bit of thickness to them which I assume I can get with batting. I've never used this before. On with the questions:

    1. how do I know if my sewing machine can handle the batting and quilting? I have a fairly cheap Huskystar E10.
    2. I'm picturing turn this  inside out as I would a softie. Can you sew the batting to the backside and then turn it or will this not work? The objects I'm creating shouldn't have a border or them

Any tutoials for flat baby toys or really fat coasters or something like that would also be a great help for me for this!!!

    Thanks!

I'm not a sewing machine expert, but I suspect that with the right needle, your machine can handle the layers of fabric and batting.  A nice cotton batting really isn't all that thick.  I've never had any problems at all!

And you can definitely turn it inside out to sew it.  I've seen some people even use that as a way of finishing their quilts rather than binding.  Right sides together, sew all the way around leaving a gap to turn it right side out. You can definitely use the same technique for smaller projects!

I think that these amazingly beautiful coasters were probably made that way and then quilted after they were turned right side out.

      Good luck!

Thanks Alyssa! Those round coasters are pretty much exactly what I'm trying to make! My friends are both DJ's and they are having a baby. I'd like to make "my first record collection" of soft flat round toys for the tike to play with.  Those will be good reference for me when trying to figure out how to do the grooves and quilting.

This forum and blog is wonderful. Everyone is so helpful! Thanks!

I don't have any advise that Alissa hasn't already given you, but I just want to say that your idea is awesome.  I'm sure your friends will love it!

I couldn't agree more that that is the BEST baby gift idea!!! Your friends will LOVE that you made their baby something so personal and uniquely fitting for them!!  What a great idea.

Hi there. I wanted to say thanks again for the help! the results are now on my blog: http://badskirt.blogspot.com/   I suppose it looks a bit dodgy, but I doubt the baby notices

I still have a long way to go, and realized later that I probably used the wrong foot on the machine and have no idea what I should use to sew freehand quilting, but I'm rather happy with the results given that I'm still a newbie! (2 months!)

              Thanks again!

They came out so well! Love love love them!  Such a great gift.

In terms of the foot on your machine for free motion quilting, the darning foot is the way to go.  And also put your feed dogs down so that you can move the whole thing around easily.
