I bought the Heather Bailey Fresh Picked Pin Cushion pattern set. It's truly fab and not to difficult! Check out the pic of my creation on my super crafty blog!

It's a very cute pincushion.  I had thought of buying the pattern, until I won Anna Maria Horner's book, Seams To Me.  There's a really cute pincushion-caddy pattern that I want to make.  After the other 100 items on my list!  I like your blog!

Yes they are super cute. I've also made the pear and strawberry. I should really get some picks up of those too. I will have to check out the book you mentioned! I am a new sewer and am addicted all ready!  Grin

I've been wanting to get that one too.  I have a secret of all the sewing that I do...I've never made a pincushion and I really need to  Wink  You are pushing me into getting that one because it is too cute.

These cushions are adorable but I was wondering. Are they all stuffed with polyfill or is there another recommendation? I'd like to make them a little weightier. I think I've read about using sawdust. Pros? Cons?

I used pollyfill to stuff mine. The directions said you could used walnut shells though. I had terrible visions of trying to pour in walnut shells and spilling everywhere so I scratched that off the list of possibilities!

Ellen, I use polyfill, but add some rice or lentils to the bottom to weigh the whole thing down a bit.

I was at a craft show a few weeks ago and we were making pin cushions in a free class - one of the ladies showing us said that she used to put a layer of steel wool in with the polyfill (like the stuff you use to scub pots with) as it helps keeps the pins sharp when you push them in and take them out - interesting idea.

my sewing instructor uses dried rosemary and says that sharpens the pins too

They look really cute- could you use them to make fruit for your kid (OK, could I use them to make fruit for my kid...) Just use more standard colors?  How big are they- 3 inches, 5 inches?
