darts, please help

    darts, please help
    on: February 14, 2009, 07:08:21 PM
Hi Ladies!  I am a novice sewer and frequent reader of the sew mama sew blog but i Hav enever posted here before.
    I could use some advice.

Today I attempted to make a staight, side zippered skirt with a facing at the waist.  After I had sewn up the zipper and side seam I realized I had cut the fabric much too large in the waist, so I tried to make darts.  I've never done anythig with darts before. When I tried on the skirt with the darts pinned but unswen, it looked fine.,  I went ahead and sewed the darts, sewed in the facing, and finsihed off ths skirt (topstitching at the waist as well) but then when I put it on the dart slook horrid! They are evenly placed and the same length, but they bunch up  and stick out.  What did I do wrong - I did iron them in as well before sewing int he facing.

    So, my questions are
    1) is there any advice on darts in general anyone can give me?
2)Is there anyway to salvage this skirt without having to take it all apart?
3)tell me I am not the only new sewer who makes these annoying mistakes!

    Thank you all so much!

Without seeing a picture, I'm not sure. But when you sew a dart, don't backstitch at the point. Just sew past it, preferably in a small stitch size. Then tie the ends of the thread in a knot. This makes a smoother dart. Also, make sure you press each dart to the side. I also wonder if you you didn't line it up straight so it doesn't fall properly. I always mark the dots from the pattern but also draw a line with a ruler so I follow it exactly. I stick pins in one side on the line and make sure they hit the line when they come out the other side so I know it's lined up properly.
