I shorten sleeves that are too long, from the top of the sleeve, if the cuff detail is too difficult to remove. Only do this if it is possible to make the armhole smaller, either under the arm, or at the 2 yoke seams or the single shoulder seam and under the arm. This is quite a process and unless you sew well and understand garment construction, I wouldn’t recommend going this route and rather take the shirts to a tailor.

  8. Anne says:

My question is does any one know the method of shortening long shirt sleeves? I always have a problem with the shirts that the sleeve are grossly too long. I’m pretty sure that my mother – who was a professional sewer told me once that that is what they do with men’s shirts. What I am wondering is will you still have sufficient size in the narrowing of the sleeve. I bought some flannel shirts which all have long sleeves which since I am quite short end up longer than my fingertips. Also the cuffs and the placket all have snap closures. thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

Was looking at childs tent .no wonder people got confused. material amout needed to end up with a perfect square, that could then be folded in a diagonal , is 10 ft .which is 3 yards and one ft. ,giving you 120 by 60 . Great idea ,just wrong measurements given .
